Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Service has been awarded $125,000 by the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corp. to help build a 40-unit single-family housing development.

The project, called the Guadalupe Model Block Development, is the group's first major construction project and will help revitalize a dilapidated community with low property values. As a participant in the national Campaign for Home Ownership, NHS has committed to helping at least 90 families purchase homes over a three-year period. NHS provided $310,000 in home improvement loans with interest rates of from 3 to 6 percent for a term of up to 25 years during 1994. Now it is working in the North Temple area to spark commercial revitalization.

It created the program Youth-Works, providing employment training for youths 14 to 18. Since 1982, more than 500 youths have participated in the program, constructing 14 homes, rehabilitating 36 and relocating 10 that were set to be demolished.
