CROSS COUNTRY: First place at the Washington Invitational men's cross country race went to BYU, while the Cougar women's team finished a respectable fourth in Seattle.

For the Cougar men, senior Mark Johansen led the way with a third place finish at 25:25.33, followed by Craig Lawson in fifth at 25:27.91, Dan Alder in sixth at 25:38.16, freshman John Hedengren in seventh at 25:1.38, Brandon Rhoads in 10th at 25:56.69, Sam St. Clair was 15th at 26:14.34 and Jason Bushnell was 29th at 27:06.79 in the 65-runner field.

BYU's men, ranked 17th nationally, tallied 25 points in the 8K race, followed by host Washington at 53, Utah third at 65, Puget Sound 97, Clark Community College at 153 and the University of Idaho at 179.

For the 11th-ranked BYU women, senior Janeth Caizalitin placed seventh with a time of 17:39.40 on the 5K course to lead her team to an 82-point total. Host Washington, ranked 15th, won the women's race with 50 points, followed by seventh-ranked Stanford at 54, 14th-ranked Oregon at 57 and Utah was sixth with 174 points.

The other top finishers for BYU were transfer Diane Wilson 13th at 17:50.8, incoming freshman Courtney Pugmire 16th at 17:55.3, Marty Aparicio 18th at 17:56.76, Melissa Teemont 28th at 18:15.12.

Utah's top finishers were Mark Bunker in eighth at 25:51.78 and Paula Morrison in 30th at 18:17.29.

The men's race was won by Brad Barquist of the Mizuno Track Club in 25:05.02, while the women's race was won by Stanford's Mary Cobb in 17:18.46.

Other Cougar women's times were Becky Ward 35th at 18:35.04, Heather Frushour 37th at 18:37.57, Elice Smith 45th at 18:48.31, Kim Nelson 46th at 18:48.74, Marci Lawson 48th at 18:49.44, Laurie Weid 49th at 18:52.49 and Tara Rhoades 53rd at 18:58.31 in the 85-runner field.

Other Utah men's times were Ray Jensen 12th at 26:05.53, Torry Kraftson 13th at 26:06.65, Greg Howell 19th at 26:21.37, Jeff Simonich 24th at 26:34.06, and Adam Stark 30th at 27:18.47.

Other Utah women's times were Lisa Gay 33rd at 18:31.94, Dayna Pack 34th at 18:33.15, Nicole Hyer 38th at 18:42.32, Aimee Jensen 41st at 18:45.31, Susan Taylor 57th at 19:17.05 and Stephanie Kelly 69th at 20:13.58.

The meet was the third of the season for Utah and the debut for BYU. Next up for Utah is the Stanford Invitational, while the Cougars are at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, Mont., this coming weekend.

MEN'S GOLF: Unable to recover from a disappointing first day of action, the BYU men's golf team shot a third-round 294, finishing ninth in the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque.

BYU shot a collective 905 for the tournament, 47 strokes behind tournament winner UNLV. Joe Summerhays (Heber City, Utah) fired the lowest round of any Cougar on Saturday, shooting a one- under 71, to finish up at 226 (78-77) and tied for 31st place.

Lonnie Damon (Bend, Ore.) turned in the Cougars' most solid performance throughout the tournament, carding a 74 to go along with Friday's 74-75 for a final total of 223. This left Damon tied for 17th place, seven shots over par and 12 strokes behind tournament winner Birk Nelson of Oregon State.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: A strong showing by the defense gave the Cougars a 2-2 tie against WAC opponent New Mexico this afternoon in Albuquerque.

Senior midfielder Becca Hansen scored early in the first half on a cross pass from teammate Ashley Monahan. Sophomore Stephanie Jones put the Cougars up by two nine minutes later in the 19th minute of play, with a quick pass from freshman forward Shauna Rohbock.

The New Mexico Lobos scored quickly (27:20) to make it 2-1 after a goal from Laurie Hegedorn with Staphanie Rider getting the assist.

The Lobos leading scorer Nicole Highfill tied it up 2-2 with just two and a half minutes to go in regulation. Neither team was able to put a goal through the net in overtime.

The Lobos were the most physical team the Cougars have played this season. "They out powered us physically in every position," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood.

SNOW TOPS RICKS: Surprising Snow College downed Ricks College 26-23, giving the Badgers a giant win against one of the nations top junior college teams in Rexburg, Idaho.

Snow lost their head coach during the recruiting season and was not expected to be among the top teams in the Western States Football League, but they defeated a Ricks team that started the season ranked second in the nation.

Former Skyline quarterback Joe Dupaix added another game to a strong season, throwing for 253 yards and a touchdown, hitting on 21 of 37 attempts. Snow runners, all eight of them, were also effective gaining 266 yards on 21 carries. Snow improves to 4-0 and 2-0 in the WSFL. Ricks, who hoped to contend for the national championship falls to 2-2 and 1-2 in league play.

FASTPITCH SOFTBALL: The Salt Lake Community College will sponsor six weeks of fastpitch softball clinics starting on Tuesday Oct. 11 for boys, Oct. 12 for girls. There will be three one-hour sessions each night, starting at 6:30 p.m. The clinics will cost $40 a person for the six weeks. There will be one instructor per four pitchers and they will teach to the level of the pitchers.
