Four Ogden area residents have been indicted by a federal grand jury on kidnapping and conspiracy charges involving the abduction of an 18-month-old boy.

Named in indictments filed Thursday in U.S. District Court were Makala Lei Crist, 22, the child's mother, Brian Daniel Eshliman, 19, David Villescas, also known as David Velasquez, and Shirley Crist, 51, the child's maternal grandmother.Makala Lei Crist, Eshliman and Villescas were charged with conspiring to kidnap young Jacob Crist on Aug. 29 from his paternal grandparents' home in Eden and then taking him across state lines to Wyoming.

Crist and Eshliman also were charged with using a stolen vehicle to transport the boy to another state.

Shirley Crist was indicted on a single charge of conspiracy to commit kidnapping for allegedly providing her daughter and Eshliman with money to flee the state.

Makala Crist appeared before U.S. Magistrate Samuel Alba for a detention hearing Thursday and was ordered to be detained in jail pending trial, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 6 before U.S. District Court Judge David Winder.

Federal prosecutors allege the child was abducted because his mother wanted to avoid appearing at a permanent custody hearing in juvenile court.

The indictment said Jacob Crist already had been taken into custody by the state Division of Family Services and temporarily placed with his paternal grandparents, David and Carolyn Krieve. Details of the custody dispute were not available.

"The Krieve family was held at knifepoint by Villescas while the infant child was removed from the home by Eshliman," the indictment said.

The boy's mother apparently remained outside in a car.

They were apprehended on Aug. 31 when Weber County sheriff's deputies, acting on tips, raided a cottage in the Fairmont subdivision in lower Ogden Canyon. They found the child asleep on a bedroom floor with his mother.
