STAKES HIGH FOR S.F.-TIMPVIEW SHOWDOWN

Thanks to Spanish Fork coach Everett Kelepolo and his Timpview counterpart Chad Van Orden, bulletin board material for Friday's Region 8 showdown (7 p.m.) is almost nonexistent.

"We just try to take each game one at a time and see how we improve," Kelepolo said of his No. 2-ranked Dons, who are seeking to go 7-0 for the first time in school history. "We don't try to overglamorize any game."Though he admits - with the league championship likely on the line when the fourth-ranked Thunderbirds (5-1) visit - "the kids know and they are pumped."

And how.

"It's a huge game as far as that goes," said Van Orden. "You take them one at a time, but the winner of this game will be in good shape."

Timpview won last year's meeting 29-25 en route to going 5-0 in Region 8 play, but it didn't mean much come state playoff time - the Thunderbirds were ousted in the 4A quarterfinals, while the Dons reached the semifinals.

So Friday's game "isn't the season by any means," added Van Orden. "Though I'd say the winner would have the inside track."

Ball control could be the determining factor with Spanish Fork quarterback Quinn Hampton and his 24 touchdown passes pacing the Dons against Timpview's balanced - though slightly shifted to the run - attack. The Thunderbirds, whose lone loss came at 5A power Skyline, average 383 yards of offense and 36 points per game.

ON THE LINE: Teams with extended streaks on the line Friday include Skyline (18 consecutive wins) at Davis and Granite (29 straight losses) at Cyprus.

SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE: Northridge visits Roy Friday in what could easily be dubbed the "Victory Bowl." The Knights and Royals are a combined 0-12 this season.

IN THE RANKS: Friday games featuring two teams ranked by the Deseret News include Brighton (No. 2, 5A) at American Fork (No. 4, 5A), Timpview (No. 4, 4A) at Spanish Fork (No. 2, 4A), Juab (No. 5, 2A) at Morgan (No. 1, 2A) and Altamont (No. 3, 1A) at Duchesne (No. 2, 1A).

HAVES, HAVE NOTS: Teams without losses and those without victories, thus far.

UNBEATEN - Brighton, East, Morgan, North Sanpete, North Sevier, Rich, Skyline, Snow Canyon and Spanish Fork.

WINLESS - Kearns, Monument Valley, Northridge, Ogden, Roy, South Summit and Timpanogos.

OH, IT'S YOU AGAIN: When Kanab visits Beaver Friday it will mark the 68th meeting since 1950 between the Region 13 rivals, who have met in state championship games seven times. The Beavers lead the series 37-30.
