Carter Fleming Tomlinson, died Oct. 14, 1996, at the University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City from complications of pneumonia.
Born 1917, in Farmington, West Virginia, the son of Herbert McKinley and Edna Blanche Dexter Tomlinson, he attended schools in Marian County, West Virginia. He joined the Navy in 1934, retired in 1954, having attained rate of Chief Ship Fitter, retired in 1980 from the University of Utah, High Temperature Heating and Air Conditioning Plant. Married Mae Edith Johnson, in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 27, 1943, she preceded him in death on April 15, 1987, later married Helen Epard Coffey on June 16, 1990.Survived by his widow, Helen; daughters, Catherine (Cathy) Francis Kitterman (John), Sandy, Utah; Patsy Ann Mecham (Mark), Annville, Penn.; stepson, George H. Coffey and stepdaughter, Renate Coffey, both from Modesto, California; three granddaughters, Karen, Sherry, Kathryn; two grandsons, Carter and Bradley; and four great-grandchildren, Nicole, Steven, Colton and Dallon; three step-grandchildren, Ryan, Jill, Heather; two step-great-grandchildren, Andrew and Madison; one brother, Damon W. Tomlinson, Newark, Delaware; two sisters, Maxine Toothman, Rivesville, West Virginia; Marth Snider, Salt Spring, Florida. Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford N. and Husted D. Tomlinson and four sisters, Dessie Curry; Catherine Tomlinson; Betty Fullen; and Dorothy Johnson.
He belonged to the VFW Post 1586, Fleet Reserve Br. 185 and was an active member and past officer of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association of SLC. He was a Veteran of World War II. During his 20 year Navy career, he served aboard U.S.S. Idaho; U.S.S. Patterson; U.S.S. Achelous; U.S.S. Pocono; and U.S.S. Minos. At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor he was serving aboard the U.S.S. Whitney. He served at Cinclant Fleet Headquarters, Norfolk, Virginia.
The family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors and nurses at the University Medical Center for their untiring efforts on his behalf.
Funeral services will be held Friday October 18, 1996, 1 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel, 10600 South 1700 East, Sandy, where friends may call Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to services.
Interment Larkin Sunset Gardens.
