Rep. Bill Orton last week accused his Republican challenger of ducking oral debates in the 3rd Congressional District. Now, the Chris Cannon campaign says Orton is avoiding a written debate of his voting record in a Utah Valley newspaper.

The Cannon and Orton staffs agreed in the summer to do a series of nine written exchanges in the Utah County Journal, a voluntary-pay newspaper delivered throughout the valley. Topics were to include Medicare, defense, welfare reform, taxes and balancing the federal budget.Orton has not submitted comments for the series, which the Journal began running Sept. 5. It has been publishing Cannon's views without Orton's rebuttals, said Mike Mower, Cannon campaign manager.

"What Orton is truly trying to obscure is his own record of avoiding close scrutiny of his voting record," Mower said.
