HOOP SIGNING: Alta High senior Chris Handy has verbally committed to play basketball at Loyola Marymount University. The 6-foot-8 center averaged 12 points and seven rebounds for Skyline last season. His family moved into the Alta boundaries over the summer. Handy also fielded scholarship offers from Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, San Diego and Weber Stater.
Football
KANSAS RB SUSPENDED: Kansas senior running back June Henley was suspended from the team after being arrested for several alleged driving violations, including suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
BOISE DUMPS FIFITA: Defensive tackle Sione Fifita, one of the few seniors on the Boise State football team, has been dismissed from the team for the rest of the season. Interim head coach Tom Mason announced the action Thursday afternoon.
Boxing
LEONARD WILL FIGHT CAMACHO: Sugar Ray Leonard, more than five years removed from his last bout, will fight Hector Camacho in February, site and date undecided.
The bout will be promoted by Bernie Dillon, who listed possible sites as New York; Las Vegas; Atlantic City, N.J., and San Antonio.
Leonard, 40, hasn't fought since losing a 12-round decision to Terry Norris in New York on Feb. 9, 1991, and taking a terrific pounding.
Leonard is 36-2-1 with 25 knockouts.
MORRISON TO FIGHT IN JAPAN: Heavyweight Tommy Morrison will return to the ring for the first time since testing HIV positive when he takes on fellow Oklahoman Anthony Cooks in Tokyo.
Morrison, who retired in February after learning he had the AIDS virus, will fight Nov. 3 on the undercard of the George Foreman-Crawford Grimsley bout.
Morrison, 27, will receive a portion of pay-per-view profits to benefit his foundation for children infected with the deadly disease.
Tennis
SABATINI MAKES IT OFFICIAL: Gabriela Sabatini, the sixth-biggest money winner in women's tennis history, but ineffective this year, announced her retirement.
The glamorous, 26-year-old Argentine ended her career in abrupt fashion. She has no plans to play in selected tournaments or a farewell tour.
EUROCARD OPEN: In Stuttgart, Germany, top-seeded Pete Sampras took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Felix Mantilla in the Eurocard Open and moved into a quarterfinal meeting with ninth-seeded Andre Agassi, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Richey Reneberg.
Cycling
ARMSTRONG UNDERGOES SURGERY: World cycling star Lance Armstrong, who announced two weeks ago he is battling testicular cancer, underwent surgery to remove two small cancerous lesions on his brain. Armstrong, the country's top road-racing cyclist, announced Oct. 8 that he underwent surgery to have a cancerous testicle removed.
Skiing
ROWMARK SKI SWAP: The 13th annual Rowmark Ski Academy Ski Swap will be held today and Saturday. A full range of ski equipment, from skis to ski clothing, will be available for both kids and adults.
The swap will be at the school, 970 E. 800 South. Hours will be 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $3 per adult or $5 per family on Friday, and $2 for adults and $3 for family on Saturday.
Money from the swap will be used to provide scholarships to junior ski racers. Along will alpine and nordic ski equipment, there will also be snowboarding equipment.
Senior Games
SOFTBALL: Two Salt Lake area slow pitch softball teams won gold medals in their respective divisions during the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George that concludes this week.
Grumpy Old Men, managed by Bill Wenerstrom, won gold medals in the "C" Division in the over 50 year-old category by going undefeated in the double elimination portion of the tournament.
Newell's Good Old Boys, managed by Newell Farnsworth, won gold medals in the "B" division of the over 50-year-old category, the second consecutive year for gold medals for this team. Newell's had to come through the loser's bracket to win.
