Authorities say new criminal investigation techniques justify a search warrant on a Utah inmate to look for clues in a 10-year-old slaying.
A search warrant was served on James Harleston Linden, an inmate in the Utah State Prison, in the investigation into the death of Monica Ann Hibbs, 24.On May 2, 1986, a motorist found Hibbs stabbed to death and wrapped in plastic and duct tape in a nearby canyon. She wasn't identified, so she was buried in the Preston Cemetery.
In January, 1989, following computer leads and using photographs and fingerprints provided by her parents and other law enforcement agencies, Sheriff Don Beckstead identified her as Hibbs.
Preston Police Chief Scott Shaw said Hibbs and Linden were convicted of a California robbery.
Linden is in prison for parole violation. He was sent there originally for a Park City robbery.
Shaw said modern forensic techniques will be used to help identify the slayer, including evidence gathered at the murder site and from the victim and Linden.
