Rep. Sonny Bono has been hospitalized for treatment of a bleeding ulcer, apparently brought on by aspirin or ibuprofen, his spokesman said Friday.

The 61-year-old Republican from Palm Springs, Calif., expects to be released from the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., during the weekend and resume campaigning for a second term next week, spokesman Frank Cullen said. The entertainer-turned-politician was dining with family and friends Thursday night when he suffered gastrointestinal discomfort, Cullen said. Bono's wife drove him to the hospital, where doctors in the intensive care unit diagnosed him with a bleeding ulcer.

Bono was transferred out of the intensive care unit and was in good condition.
