An animal-rights group is claiming responsibility for raiding a Summit County mink ranch early Friday - freeing hundreds of mink and foxes.
Someone entered a mink ranch in Hoytsville and released the animals, said Summit County Lt. Lewis Stevens.Investigators don't have an exact count of how many animals were released, but said the number could be as high as 1,000.
Ranchers and neighbors spent the day Friday trying to round up missing mink and foxes. Many animals wandered onto nearby I-80 and were run over, said Stevens.
No arrests have been made.
The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade issued a press release Friday saying the underground Animal Liberation Front was claiming credit for the animal release.
The ALF claims to have released 35,000 mink in North America, including 5,000 in Utah, in 18 raids since last fall.
