Werner Heinrich Niebuhr, 80, passed away Thursday evening, October 24, 1996 in Salt Lake City after a heart attack and bypass surgery.
Werner was born April 10, 1916 in Bielefeld, Germany. He was an active member of the LDS Church all his life. He married Hilda Schabbehard November 21, 1939 in Bielefeld, Germany. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in August, 1952. He served as a district president and helped re-establish the church in Germany after World War II. He and his family emigrated to the U.S. in 1952, where they moved to Salt Lake City. He utilized his "old world" craftsmanship as an employee for Fetzer's until he retired in 1981. He served in many church positions in the Waterloo ward. He and his beloved wife, Hilda were called as temple workers in 1990 to serve in the Freiberg Temple in East Germany. He served there as a member of the temple presidency. He was an active ordinance worker and sealer in the Salt Lake Temple right up until the day he entered the hospital.As one can see, he loved his family, church, and temple work greatly.
Werner is survived by his wife, Hilda, Salt Lake City; sons, Roland (Roslyn) of Bennion, Ralf (Ann) of West Valley City; daughter, Judy (Scott) Hogan of Bountiful; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Hanna Schwerdt of Wyomissing, Penn.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 28, 1996, 12 noon, at the Salt Lake 14th Ward 142 West 200 North. Friends may call Sunday 6-8 p.m. at Memorial Estates Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, and Monday, one hour prior to services at the churcih. Interment, Mountain View Memorial Estates.
