I would like to respond to the recent controversy involving the hazing incident at Hillcrest High School. I feel that the appropriate action was taken.

For some reason, people don't seem to contemplate or understand the possible consequences of their actions anymore. Drunken drivers (and the people who give them keys and/or alcohol) can expect a ticket, but never do they anticipate vehicular homicide. People lighting firecrackers accept the possibility of a fine but rarely do they want the responsibility of a person, house or forest catching on fire. Cliff jumpers at Lake Powell expect to receive a welt or bruise, but becoming paralyzed is just beyond their comprehension.Did the boys involved in this hazing incident think that they were playing a joke? I define a joke as something that is funny and makes everyone involved laugh. This recent incident left only the powerful and popular laughing and in control. I think that sounds abusive and malicious.

Responsible people consider all the consequences: the good, the bad, the probable and the inconceivable. They choose to accept them and proceed or reject them and abandon the action. So, if you think that your consequences were too tough, too bad.
