Our loving husband, father and grandfather, Hoffman Castleton Hughes, died Saturday, October 26, 1996.

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 13, 1912 to Theophilus and Hattie Mae Castleton Hughes. He attended LDS High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Utah in 1936. He married Virginia Jones on November 19, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired as a Lt. Commander.He established his own Consulting Structural Engineering firm, H. C. Hughes Company. During his career he was responsible for the structural design of approximately 4,000 major buildings in the Mountain West, including the Kennecott Building, the original University of Utah Medical Center, the Huntsman Center Sports Arena, K.S.L. Bonneville International Center, the University Club Building, as well as numerous buildings on university campuses. He was the past president of the Consulting Engineers Council of Utah. He was one of the first structural engineers in the West to incorporate earthquake design in buildings. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Richard (Gayle Cannon) and John; daughters, Marjorie Bsumek; Martha Blood (Ted); and Kathryn Heiner (Joe); and a sister, Adele Chandler. He has sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill, and sisters, Marian Giauque and Ellen Greene.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 1996 at noon at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary on Monday from 6-8 p.m. or one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
