JOHN ASHBERY, one of the most distinguished and celebrated poets of his generation, will be in Salt Lake City this week to read at Westminster College. Accompanying Ashbery will be French poet Pierre Martory.

On Monday, Oct. 28, Ashbery and Martory will read and discuss "The Translator, the Translated: A Reading and Discussion" at 8 p.m. in Nunemaker Place on the Westminster campus. At 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, Ashbery will read from his own work at the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts on campus.Ashbery has published 16 books of verse and has won the Pulitzer Prize as well as other awards. - JAY WRIGHT has been named the recipient of the 62nd Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, for "distinguished poetic achievement." The fellowship carries a prize of $20,000.

Wright, a resident of Bradford, Vt., was born in Albuquerque in 1935. He's written eight volumes of poetry, including "Elaine's Book," 1988, and "Boleros," 1991; he has held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, among other honors.
