Thomas A. Martin, a former chief administrative officer for Provo city, died at home Thursday after a two-year battle with brain cancer. He was 59.

Mr. Martin was first diagnosed with a brain tumor late in 1994 and underwent surgery in January 1995.He was hired as the city's chief administrator in 1991 after serving for 10 years as the city manager in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. He also served as city manager of Huntington Woods, Mich., and as assistant city manager of Royal Oak, Mich.

He took an indefinite leave as Provo's top administrator in June 1995. He was replaced by Lewis Billings.

Provo Mayor George Stewart said Mr. Martin contributed greatly to the management and leadership of Provo.

Mr. Martin was raised in Washington, but his father grew up in Provo. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in political science.

Services are scheduled Monday at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont Stake Center, 4300 N. Canyon Road.
