A 12-year-old boy caught driving a stolen car crashed into a South Salt Lake light pole during a brief chase Friday.

The driver and four other boys, ages 13 and 14, were traveling north on 500 East about 7 p.m. when police spotted them, said South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Beau Bebka. An officer tried to pull them over when he noticed the driver looked very young. The car did not stop but instead tried to evade police, Bebka said. The car was traveling at about 40 miles per hour when, during a turn, the driver lost control and ran into a light pole on 500 East near 2350 South.

The light pole was not damaged during the crash, but the car was totaled, Bebka said. The occupants sustained minor injuries, and all five fled from the scene. Police were able to locate four of the boys.
