Roman shorthand

Shorthand, the art of writing symbols rapidly enough to record speech, goes back to ancient times. In the year 63 B.C., a Roman citizen named Marcus Tullius Tiro invented a system of notes or symbols by which he recorded the speeches of Cicero, Seneca and others in the Roman Senate.

The system invented by Tiro was taught in Roman schools and remained in use for several centuries.
