One man is dead and another clinging to life after separate auto pedestrian accidents.
One person was killed when he tried to cross State Street at 845 South, said Salt Lake police Lt. Phil Kirk. The man was hit by a Pony Express mail truck about 8:25 p.m. The 59-year-old victim, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, Kirk said.
A separate accident left a 44-year-old man in critical condition after being struck by a car while crossing a crosswalk at the University of Utah Monday afternoon.
The man, a University of Utah employee whose name has not been released, was walking across South Campus Drive, 450 South, at a crosswalk near the Huntsman Center when he was hit by a westbound car moving at 25 to 30 mph, said Lt. Brent Marchant.
The driver, Ilena Evans, 20, also a University of Utah employee, apparently didn't see the man, Marchant said.
The man was taken to the University of Utah Medical Center.
That particular crosswalk, with a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic, has had a high number of auto pedestrian accidents, Marchant said.
Both accidents are still under investigation.
