Corel Corp. plans to develop a personal digital assistant by mid-1997.

Corel said its digital assistant will have scheduling, contact management and voice features. It also will let users browse the World Wide Web, write notes via handwriting or a keyboard, and send and retrieve e-mail.All applications will be written in Sun Microsystem's Java programming language, the company said.

The pocket-size device will be available with either a monochrome or color LCD screen and come with rechargable batteries, a built-in modem, a wall-mount adapter and a keyboard docking station for synchronizing data with a desktop computer. Corel said its device will retail for under $500.
