A veterinarian was injured seriously Saturday morning when propane gas exploded inside his mobile veterinary treatment van, according to Lt. Kevin McLeod of the Davis County Sheriff's Office.
Dr. Warren J. Hess is in serious but stable condition in the burn unit at University Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, mostly his upper body area, according to McLeod. The explosion occurred at 9:15 a.m. Saturday inside his mobile treatment van, parked at his home at 192 N. 1850 West in West Point, McLeod said.
Hess was apparently unaware of a propane leak inside the van, McLeod said, and the explosion was triggered when he lit a propane-fueled fixture.
Hess was first taken to Davis Hospital, then transferred by air ambulance to the burn center.
