Nearly 100 more students are enrolled in the Sevier School District this year than at the beginning of the 1995-96 school year, it has been announced by personnel at the district office.
Enrollment on Oct. 1 included 5,140 students, compared with 5,046 last year, the report said.About 90 are enrolled in special-education programs and 80 are nonresidents, mostly Indian students from the Navajo Reservation. That program has been ongoing for nearly four decades, wherein students spend the school year in the Richfield and South Sevier attendance areas and return to their homes for the summer.
Many of the Navajo students have continued their education after high school by attending universities, colleges and technology schools. Some have returned to the reservation to work while others have gained positions with businesses and industries.
Some Sevier District schools increased in the number of students this year while others recorded decreases.
The largest increase was at the Cedar Ridge (alternative) High School in Richfield with 37 students, while the most significant decline is at Red Hills Middle School in Richfield with 35 fewer students than a year ago.
