The Department of Environmental Quality's "Red Light-Green Light" program, which regulates wood-burning along the Wasatch Front during the winter, will start its fifth season Nov. 1.
The system, used to notify residents when wood-burning is allowed, will continue through March 1.DEQ uses a simple color-coded method of alerting the public to air-quality conditions that sometimes require a ban on wood-burning. A green light indicates wood-burning is acceptable; yellow signifies voluntary abstention from burning; red means it is illegal to burn wood.
Conditions will be determined by 6:05 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and by 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekends and holidays.
Notices are announced daily by newspapers, television and radio stations. Daily announcements will be published in the Deseret News. Recorded updates are available by calling 533-7239 in Salt Lake and Davis counties, 1-800-228-5434 elsewhere.
