A man blew himself up when he tried to use a hand grenade to harvest fish, state-run media reported Friday.
Luong Van Giai and three friends had gone fishing on a river in Vietnam's northern Cao Bang province on the Chinese border. But instead of a rod and reel, Giai produced an American-made Vietnam War-era hand grenade to stun the fish so they could be scooped out of the water. The grenade exploded in Giai's hand, killing him instantly, said the Vietnamese-language newspaper Lao Dong.
The three other men suffered serious injuries, the newspaper said.
The use of explosives as an effective but environmentally catastrophic means of fishing is becoming increasingly common in parts of Asia.
