A frantic mother who chased two car thieves after they drove off with her baby in the back seat was reunited with the smiling infant Friday after the girl was found safe in the abandoned car in New York.

The frantic mother, Tiffany Winfield, ran through a parking lot after the two thieves, who drove down an embankment to escape,"It does not appear that the suspects knew the child was in the car," said Sgt. Jack Smith of the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, Winfield went into the Top Four Caterers & Restaurant in Burlington - between Trenton and Philadelphia on the Delaware River - leaving her 1994 red Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible running so she could keep her 11-month-old daughter, Jazmine, warm.

"I actually saw the car speed away and I was running behind it," the 23-year-old sales clerk said. "I almost could have caught it."

Just after noon Friday, the car was found abandoned and unlocked in Brooklyn. Jazmine, who appeared to have been fed and well taken care of, was still in her infant seat.
