Evening snow showers resulted in widespread traffic jams and car accidents throughout the Wasatch Front on Friday.

Big Cottonwood Canyon was closed about 5 p.m. after a car ran off the road into a creek, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Larry Bringhurst. The driver was not injured, and the road was reopened to cars with snow tires and/or chains about 8:30 p.m.About 25 semitrailer trucks stuck in the snow in Parleys Canyon reduced traffic to a bumper-to-bumper pace for about four hours, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Larry Wehrli. A 4 p.m. crash on I-15 near 5400 South backed up traffic for miles.

Some 40 accidents were reported on local freeways between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., including a rollover on I-80 near milepost 108, Wehrli said.

During the same period, about 30 traffic accidents were reported throughout the suburbs, said Valley Emergency Communications Center supervisor Tina Johnson. Injuries were reported in about 15 incidents.

"With the first snowstorms, the residual oil on the road causes roads to be more slippery," Bringhurst said. People need to slow down and be more cautious, he said.
