Something more than coffee was brewing at a downtown Salt Lake coffee shop Friday night.

A small fire broke out on the roof near the rear of the Bad Ass Coffee Co., 45 E. 200 South, about 11 p.m. Three employees were finishing the day's cleanup and were about to leave when smoke emerged through the ceiling."We think (the cause) is electrical," said employee Brooke Beckstead. "It was just smoke. It wasn't even black smoke."

"It smelled like something plastic was burning," said fellow employee Eric Lindgren.

Salt Lake fire crews arrived just as the smoke emerging from the left corner of the building intensified. Flames erupted when fire-fighters broke through the roofing and into the source.

The flames were quickly extinguished, however. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The building had recently been remodeled, and the coffee shop opened for business about four months ago, Beckstead said.
