A Nissan minivan, two Gulf-stream boats with trailers, an Alaskan ski vacation, living room furniture, a sprinkler system, appliances and travel packages are among items available at the annual Boy Scout Holiday Auction.

Sponsored by the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America, the auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in the Salt Lake Hilton. A light buffet will be served. Tickets are $30 a couple and may be obtained by calling 582-3663 or at the door.Former NFL football player and actor Merlin Olsen will emcee the auction, which benefits urban Scouting programs. Funds raised will also be used to help combat youth drug abuse, gang activities, violence, vandalism, child abuse and illiteracy.

Some $300,000 in donated items will be auctioned in a live and silent auction. A new item this year will be sponsorship of an inner-city "Learning for Life" program at a local elementary school. The buyer will be recognized. It will include a year-round, classroom-based, co-ed program for grades 1-12 aimed at enhancing existing services for children in math, literacy, educational projects and sports.

The sponsorship is aimed at helping residents realize how Scouting reaches out to the community. It is particularly designed for those who may not have been involved in Scouting, said council spokesman Kay Godfrey.

"Learning for Life" now reaches 2,800 youths in 71 classrooms and 10 schools in the Salt Lake and Granite school districts. The Family Shelter and the YWCA Shelter for Battered and Abused Women are also included in the program.

Peter Evans, publisher of the Utah Jazz's HomeCourt Magazine, is chairman of the auction. In addition, the Scout council will send a tape of goodwill wishes to actor Robert Urich, who is fighting cancer. He has been honorary chairman of the auction for three years. Vic Rowberry, a senior district executive at the Scout council, is adviser to the auction committee.
