A fire broke out on a truck being hauled through the English Channel tunnel on a freight shuttle, injuring eight people. It was the first serious accident since the tunnel opened in 1994.

Only two of the injured remained hospitalized Tuesday following the Monday night fire. All eight had been overcome by fumes. All service in the tunnel, nicknamed the Chunnel, was stopped, and Eurotunnel officials said it was too early to know when full service would be restored.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. There were reports that hazardous material was being transported on the freight shuttle, but a Eurotunnel spokesman, said it was not linked to the fire.
