The recent disclosure of the list of individuals who made cash gifts to Mayor Corradini to help her offset the costs of her involvement in the Bonneville Pacific case confirms once again that this mayor does not represent the ethics and values of the majority of the residents of our beloved Salt Lake City.
What will it come to next? Rent-a-prisoner. Well-connected felons will be able to pay unemployed people to serve their jail sentence. How dumb do they think we are? Nobody makes these kinds of payments without expecting something in return. What these corrupt payments demonstrate is the power of the East Bench social elite and their influence in our community. These individuals hobnob at the symphony, the 2002 Olympics meetings and other glitzy social events and maintain that these payments are just a little help for their friends. How else can you explain the recent endorsement of the mayor's re-election efforts by such prominent Republicans as Jake Garn and Jon Huntsman?
These payments are a disgrace. We can all think of more deserving individuals or better causes for this money. Of course, these people aren't part of the elite social scene and won't be able to return such a gift with favors from City Hall. Let's do ourselves all a big favor and demand that the mayor resign. We need a person in office who represents the values of our community.
