SHARE WHITE COUPLE FOUND GUILTY IN ASSAULT OF BLACK BOY IN S.C.

A white couple accused of tying a 9-year-old black boy to a tree and beating and choking him to teach him a lesson about stealing were found not guilty of lynching and convicted of a lesser assault charge Friday.

Benjamin and Betty Mims could get up to 10 years in prison at sentencing Dec. 2. They escaped a possible 20-year term following their acquittal on charges of lynching, also known as mob violence.The jury of seven whites and five blacks deliberated 8 1/2 hours before convicting the couple of aggravated assault and battery.
