GOLF: The BYU men's golf team ended the fall season with a first-place finish at the Long Beach State 49er Golf Classic on Tuesday.

The Cougars, who were tied with Fresno State going into the final round, shot a 287 to take sole possession of first place. The Cougars' tournament total of 860 was four strokes better than second place finisher Long Beach State. Fresno State finished third with a score of 868. Other local schools participating in the two-day tournament were Utah State (872, fifth place), Weber State (875, sixth place), Utah (894, 11th place) and Southern Utah (936, 19th place).

BASKETBALL PREVIEW: BYU basketball fans will get their first chance to catch a glimpse of the 1996-97 Cougar squad tonight at 7 at the annual BYU varsity basketball preview at the Marriott Center.

REID RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP: Former BYU basketball guard Randy Reid has been selected as the recipient of a $5,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He was one of six selected to the honor. Reid, who was accepted to Harvard, will graduate from BYU this December with a bachelor's in finance and a GPA of 3.35.

VOLLEYBALL: The Cougar women's volleyball team won its 13th straight match by downing non-conference foe Idaho State 15-10, 15-8, 15-10 on Tuesday. Senior Gale Johnson led the Cougs with 15 kills and 15 digs. BYU plays hosts TCU and SMU on Friday and Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse.
