Voter turnout on Tuesday was disappointing for a presidential election year - 65.52 percent of registered voters statewide, say state election officials.

Utah still was better than the nation as a whole. Voter turnout was below 50 percent, the worst since a presidential election in the 1920s.Turnout in the most populous county - Salt Lake County - was 66.24 percent - still low compared to recent years, said Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen.

The low turnout in Utah could be because the two top races here - president and governor - weren't very close. Gov. Mike Leavitt held a huge lead over Democrat Jim Bradley and Republican Bob Dole was always going to win here, but lose the national election.
