The First Presidency - President Gordon B. Hinckley, President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust - has issued the following statement:
"We enthusiastically endorse the designation of National Family Week, November 24-30, which appropriately coincides with the week in which the nation observes the traditional Thanksgiving holiday."The family is ordained of God. It is traditional for families to be together during the holiday season. Happy families are paramount among the blessings for which gratitude should be expressed to the Lord.
"Husbands and wives have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. They have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.
"Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work and wholesome recreational activities.
"During the coming National Family Week and thereafter, we pray that responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere will promote measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."
