IT’S TIME TO TURN TO THE FLAT TAX

SHARE IT’S TIME TO TURN TO THE FLAT TAX

We want a flat tax.

The ideas of Steve Forbes, Richard Armey and the commission recently set up to examine a flat tax are right where the American people want to be - especially the brilliantly simple idea of Mr. Forbes. It is time to stop talking and start implementing.

Forbes' astute proposal has no exemptions whatsoever and suggests a flat 17 percent rate, with the first $36,000 being tax-free.

It is true that even a flat tax system is regressive since the poor and middle class will obviously get the benefits while the "rich" will be paying a higher percentage. For example, a middle-class family of four making $36,000 or less per year will pay 0 percent. One making $50,000 will pay about 5 percent ($50,000 minus $36,000 is $14,000, and 17 percent of $14,000 is $2,380 or about 5 percent of the total).

A more financially blessed family making $300,000 will pay nearly 15 percent. The poor, of course, will pay nothing. However, it is infinitely better than what is now being inflicted upon the American people with the current confusing and inequitable tax codes.

Our representatives in Washington need to know how we feel.
