MINES BILL WOULD DESTROY FREEDOM

SHARE MINES BILL WOULD DESTROY FREEDOM

Although Rep. Tom Matthews, D-Carbon County, proposed the bill to have all abandoned mines sealed through state funding, many appear to be lifesaving and farsighted. In reality, the bill legislates (imposes force) where personal responsibility should take precedence.

While one would feel remorse for those who lose their life while exploring, would a proposal to legislate against skiing be any less urgent due to avalanche danger? Or even fishing due to the many drownings which have occurred in Utah the past few years? What about natural fissures called caves; do they not propose danger to spelunkers? One could go on ad infinitum about dangers. This proposal would encroach on the privileges afforded amateur gold seekers not to say the controversy it would evoke because it would not be enforceable on American Indian Tribal lands.

Would the BLM and U.S. Forest Service officials go along with the responsibility of enforcement?
