During the last few months we have been witnessing the events surrounding the West Valley City ice arena. To preface my remarks I would like to say that in the past I have been a supporter of this effort to bring professional hockey and the Olympic hockey venue to our fair city. However, the revelation that city officials have been less than truthful in their presentation of the ice arena project to the citizens of West Valley City has left a stain on our city officials' characters.
This loss of character is not isolated to West Valley officials. It is pervasive at all levels of government, from the president of the United States to local officials.I have no doubt that the city, county and state have the ability to tax the citizens and assure that the ice arena will be built, and with $51 million, it should be a beautiful building. However, at its core it will always be a shabby building because its foundation is not on firm moral ground.
