Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden won her second gold medal of the World Alpine Championships on Saturday by taking the slalom.
Wiberg finished with a combined time of 1 minute 31.46 and won by almost a second over two slalom specialists. Patricia Chauvet of France - sixth after the first run - had the quickest second run to take silver in 1:32.32. It was her first medal after 10 years of trying in the worlds and Olympics.Slovenia's Urska Hrovat, second in the World Cup slalom points this season, led Wiberg by a slim .05 after the first run but couldn't hold on and took bronze in 1:32.33.
Wiberg's victory Saturday extended her record of gold or nothing at the World Championships or Olympics. She won the combined earlier in the week. She took home Olympics golds in 1994 and '92 in the combined and giant slalom, and a gold in giant slalom in the 1991 worlds. She has never won a bronze or silver medal in the big events.
"The slalom has always been my best discipline and I've always wanted to win a medal in slalom," Wiberg said. "I think it's hard to be good in all four disciplines."
The 25-year-old Swede, who now lives in Monte Carlo, comes as close as any woman in the world to doing it.
"I don't think I am better than anyone else, but I like to take part in big events," Wiberg said. "It's a special feeling when lots of people are watching the races.
"Maybe something like that helped me risk everything in that second run for a good time."
In addition to her two victories in these championships, Wiberg skied in the other three women's races, finishing ninth in super-G, 21st in downhill and 18th in giant slalom.
After nine of 10 events, Italy leads with four medals overall and three gold.
