A 17-year-old youth was shot and killed by another man outside his mobile home just before midnight Friday.
Leonard Aragon, a junior at Hillcrest High School, was flown to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead early Saturday morning.Aragon arrived home, 50 W. Depot St. (160 North) in Midvale, and was getting out of his car when he was approached by a 30-year-old man he knew, said Midvale Capt. Dan Pearson.
The older man had a gun in his hand and the two began to argue, Pearson said.
After a few minutes of arguing, investigators believe the older man shot Aragon with the handgun once in the chest and then left, Pearson said.
Aragon tried to open the door to the mobile home he shared with his parents, but it was locked. He broke out a window, which woke his parents, Pearson said.
Before he lost consciousness, Aragon told his mother who had shot him, Pearson said. Detectives arrested a 30-year-old man who was still riding his bike near his home, which is also in Midvale.
The man had "disposed of the weapon," Pearson said, but he eventually led police to the gun investigators believe was used to kill Aragon. Pearson declined to say where the gun was found.
Luis Vasquez, 30, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of criminal homicide, Pearson said. He expects detectives to screen the case with the county attorney's office early next week.
