Sloan the speaker at All-State banquet
Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan will be the speaker at the Deseret News All-State Basketball Awards Banquet, Saturday, March 23, at Little America at noon.
This is the second year the Deseret News has honored first-team players for both boys and girls from the 1A through 5A classifications.
Sloan is the winningest coach in Jazz franchise history with a 401-210 won-lost record following Monday night's 110-87 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Last year he coached the team to its best regular-season record ever, 60-21. Sloan also has been named an assistant coach for the United States for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Last year Jazz president Frank Layden was the speaker.
Big Sky honors Smith
OGDEN - Weber State center Andy Smith, a 6-8 senior from West Valley City, Utah, has been named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.
Smith scored 43 points and grabbed 19 rebounds on the week as Weber State won its final two regular-season home games and moved into a tie for second place in the league.
Smith shot 78 percent from the floor, 100 percent from the free throw line, and added a three-point shot. Smith also added seven steals, six assists, and three blocked shots on the week.
He is third in the conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 82 percent of his shots.
He is fifth in the league in field goal percentage, hitting 58 percent of his attempts and third in blocked shots, swatting 1.2 attempts per game.
