Seniors age 60 and older are needed to spend time with adults at the Utah State Developmental Center as Foster Grandparents.
Foster Grandparent volunteers provide attention to residents of the who have mental and physical disabilities and do not have regular contact with family or friends. They give encouragement and support as residents prepare for the day, attend therapy sessions and other activities.Lynn Peterson, a Foster Grandparent of seven years, spends time with a "grandson" who was injured in an automobile accident as a sophomore in college more than 30 years ago. "Before I started reading to him, he wouldn't talk," said Peterson. "Now he beams, and we read the books together."
Volunteers are assigned one or two residents and spend 20 hours each week volunteering. Transportation to and from the Developmental Center is provided, as well as lunch and a small stipend.
