Seniors age 60 and older are needed to spend time with adults at the Utah State Developmental Center as Foster Grandparents.

Foster Grandparent volunteers provide attention to residents of the who have mental and physical disabilities and do not have regular contact with family or friends. They give encouragement and support as residents prepare for the day, attend therapy sessions and other activities.Lynn Peterson, a Foster Grandparent of seven years, spends time with a "grandson" who was injured in an automobile accident as a sophomore in college more than 30 years ago. "Before I started reading to him, he wouldn't talk," said Peterson. "Now he beams, and we read the books together."

Volunteers are assigned one or two residents and spend 20 hours each week volunteering. Transportation to and from the Developmental Center is provided, as well as lunch and a small stipend.

Other volunteer opportunities available in Utah County include:

- Distribute materials for Turning Point. The center for Personal and Career Development at UVSC needs volunteers to distribute materials to libraries and other organizations any weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

- Tutor students at Alpine Life and Learning Center. More than 150 tutors are still needed to help students in a variety of subjects. Volunteers will be matched one-on-one with students to provide motivation as well as academic support.

- Share Vietnamese language skills. Utah State Hospital needs help from individuals with Vietnamese language skills to visit with a patient who speaks only this language.

- Teach English. The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program needs volunteers on Tuesday through Thursdays evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Dixon Middle School. Volunteers will help instructors teach Spanish, Middle Eastern, Asian and European students in the classroom. Foreign language experience is helpful but not required.
