As incense and flickering candles filled this rural community's basilica, hundreds of Indians prayed in their native languages for a message of peace and equality during Tuesday's papal visit.

"We want him to end the violence, to bring us tranquility," said Manuel Zept, a 64-year-old lay minister."And we want him to stop the slavery suffered by the poor people of this nation.".

Beginning his first visit to Central America in 13 years, the pope on Monday exhorted Guatemalans to end their 35-year civil war - the region's last and longest conflict. He asked them to do everything possible to end "a history of war and violence."

"I come as the pilgrim of love and hope," the pope said.
