The Turks & Caicos Islands, a British crown colony in the West Indies, pays philatelic tribute to one of the world's greatest underwater explorers - Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

A sheetlet of nine stamps and two souvenir sheets features various milestones in the history of autonomous diving and the contributions of Cousteau. Included in the designs are William James' first scuba apparatus, a diver employing a Fleuss oxygen rebreathing apparatus, an armored diving suit, a scuba diver employing an underwater camera, and a diver exploring the sunken "Lusitania."One souvenir sheet shows a "Helmet Diver" (circa 1935). Also seen is a portrait of Cousteau. A second sheet also has a portrait of Cousteau.

Cousteau is known throughout the world for his many books and TV programs that have helped millions of people understand the importance of guarding the delicate ecological balance of the oceans.
