Attorney Gen. Jan Graham and Office of Recovery director Emma Chacon last week announced that Steven Brent Wilcox of Salt Lake City was ordered to serve zero to five years in the Utah State Prison for failure to pay child support.

Along with the prison term, Wilcox was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and about $30,000 in back child support. In Utah, it is a crime for a parent to fail to support a child under the age of 18 who is in needy circumstances. A first offense is generally a class A misdemeanor and repeat offenders, such as Wilcox, are subject to prosecution as felons. Last year, 17 people served jail time for failing to pay court-ordered child support.
