WRESTLING: Cougar freshman Gary Sanderson's first-place finish in the 142 lb. weight class led the BYU wrestlers to third-place finish with 64 points in the WAC Championship tournament Saturday night in Fresno, Calif.
After a first-round bye, Sanderson's matched up with Air Force's Sheroyd Brown in the second round and beat him 7-6. Fresno State's Brendan Buckley came up one point short as Sanderson beat him 9-8 to clinch his first-place title.
Defending WAC champion Fresno State repeated its championship season with a first place finish (107 points). Wyoming's 68 points took second.
BASEBALL: BYU make it three straight over Grand Canyon University as the Cougars swept a WAC doubleheader Saturday at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.
The Cougars took the first game, 7-4, thanks to a big game by third baseman Ryan Roberts, who went 3-for-3 with a triple and to homers.
In the second game, Grand Canyon hurt itself with some sloppy defense, handing BYU a 9-4 win.
BYU improved to 9-7, 4-2.
Utah
MEN'S TENNIS: The fifth-ranked Texas Christian men's tennis team blanked Utah, 7-0 Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
The win lifted the Horned Frogs' season record to 9-1 while the Utes fell to 7-7. TCU handled every singles match in straight sets, sweeping the doubles as well.
The Utes now have a week off before facing Dartmouth on March 18 in San Diego.
Utah State
SOFTBALL: Utah State's women's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against UNLV.
The Rebels beat the Aggies 6-2 in game one and 3-2 in game two.
Utah State dropped to 12-9 overall and evened its league record at 4-4. Next weekend the Aggies travel to Fullerton for a pair of doubleheaders on March 16-17.
Southern Utah
SOFTBALL: The Southern Utah softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Mesa State Saturday. Mesa State shutout the Thunderbirds 3-0 in the first game, and needed eight innings to pull out a 5-3 win in the second. With the loses, SUU fell to 6-8 on the season.
