For a pair of young pitchers, Paul Wilson and Livan Hernandez sure look like they've been around for a while.

Wilson, the No. 1 pick in the 1994 draft, worked four scoreless innings Sunday for the New York Mets, allowing only one hit in a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros.Hernandez was even sharper for the Florida Marlins, shutting out Toronto for four innings without giving up a hit or walk. The 21-year-old Cuban defector has pitched nine scoreless innings this spring, allowing just two hits.

At Port St. Lucie, Fla., Brent Mayne hit a two-run homer. Mayne, who had just one hit in his previous 14 at-bats this spring, is getting to play this spring because catcher Todd Hundley is still recovering from off-season surgery on his left wrist.

At Miami, Charles Johnson hit an RBI single that helped Florida win at Joe Robbie Stadium in a game shortened to 41/2 innings because of rain.

At Las Vegas, Tim Salmon hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the spring for California in a split-squad game. He drove in five runs as the Angels improved to 11-1 in exhibition play.

At Tucson, Ariz., Larry Walker hit his third homer of the exhibition season as Colorado handed California its only loss this spring in a game between split squads.

At Vero Beach, Fla., Mike Piazza hit his first home run of the spring and Ismael Valdes pitched four scoreless innings as Los Angeles won a game shortened to five innings by rain.

At Plant City, Fla., Jose Rijo pitched two perfect innings in his first "A" game appearance for Cincinnati. Rijo is trying to come back from reconstructive surgery on his elbow last Aug. 22.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Wil Cordero drove in three runs for Boston. Kirby Puckett hit a two-run single for Minnesota.

Cardinals 12, White Sox 3

At Sarasota, Fla., Brian Jordan hit his third home run in three games and also doubled for St. Louis. Jordan was moved from the leadoff spot to cleanup by manager Tony La Russa.

At Bradenton, Fla., Ivan Rodriguez went 4-for-4 and Rusty Greer hit a three-run homer for Texas.

At Scottsdale, Ariz., pitching prospects Shawn Estes and Steve Bourgeois did not allow an earned run in seven innings for San Francisco in a split-squad game.

At Peoria, Ariz., Fernando Valenzuela pitched four hitless innings for San Diego. Jacob Cruz hit a grand slam during San Francisco's eight-run eighth and Rob Deer homered for the Padres.
