Harry Wong Louie, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and unique friend, age 74, passed away peacefully at his home on March 9, 1996, in Salt Lake City of diabetes and other complications. We commend our mother, Helen, for her devoted, tender care during his lingering illness.
Harry was born November 13, 1921, to Wing and Mae Szto in Ogden, Utah, and married Helen Yee on March 5, 1950, in Phoenix, Arizona.He graduated from Ogden High and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1947 Harry became the owner of the King Joy Cafe where he shared his generosity and warmth to his extended "family" for over 44 years. Harry was a Utah Chapter President of the Food Services Executive Assn. and a member of the board of governors of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. An avid, long-time supporter of the U of U athletic program, his favorite words were, "Beat BYU!".
Survived by Helen, his cherished wife of 46 years; and eight children, Steven (Rae), Eugene (Janet), Stuart (Jacquie) and Marjean of Salt Lake City, Nancy Yep (Raymond) of Tokyo, Japan; Patty of New York, New York; Jeffrey (Tamra) of Long Valley, New Jersey; and Bradley (Marsha) of Oakland, Calif.; ten grandchildren, Stephanie, Erin, Jordan, Lauren, Jennifer, Kimberly, Alec Harry, Tyler and Morgan Louie and Michael Yep; his two sisters, Jean Louie and Mary Kloer (Charles); his three brothers, William (Merrie), Robert (Lynn) and Grant (Marlene).
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward and Mack; and sisters, May and Bessie.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Darrell Hensleigh, the staff at the Salt Lake Clinic, and the numerous caregivers at LDS Hospital, St. Joseph's Villa and Creekside Home Health Care for their excellent and personalized care and support over the years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Harry's name to the American Diabetes Association or the University of Utah Athletic Department.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at Neil O'Donnel & Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South, where family and friends may call Tuesday, March 12, from 6-8 p.m. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South.
