Motorcycle stunt rider Butch Laswell appears way off course, left, as he sails over a pedestrian bridge spanning Mesquite Boulevard at the Oasis Resort as he attempts to set a new world record height for motorcyle jumping. Laswell, blown off course by gusting winds, crashes to the pavement, above, as some 5,000 spectators watch in horror. The veteran of some 5,000 jumps in his 20-year career was pronounced dead about an hour later at a Las Vegas hospital. Story on Page B3.
