First District Congressman Jim Hansen, R-Utah, plans to file for re-election this afternoon.

Hansen has served eight terms in the House of Representatives since he beat out incumbent Gunn McKay in 1980. That's longer than any Utah congressman ever. Hansen said he has been able to accomplish much in the House - most recently, helping in the effort to save Hill Air Force Base from closing - and said he can yet do a lot of good for constituents, especially in military and public lands matters."I honestly feel we've done a good job for the people of Utah," he said.

So far no opposing candidate has filed in the 1st Congressional District race, though Democrat Greg Sanders, chairman of the Davis County Democratic Party, has said he will run.
