Q. What does the word "Bible" mean?

A. The name "Bible" comes from the word "byblos," which means "papyrus" or "book." In ancient Phoenicia, one of the main cities was Byblos, and it was a big exporter of papyrus. Phoenicia (that's the Greek name for Canaan) was along the coast of what is now Lebanon and Syria. Romance languages used the word "biblia" as a name for the Scriptures. The word evolved into Bibliotheca, Bibliam, Bibylle, Byble and Bible.
