The Davis School District swept the high school and junior high categories of the statewide Science Olympiad March 2 at Weber State University.

Teams from Davis High and Fairfield Junior High (which feeds into Davis) both took first place. A second team from Fairfield took third.

"Our teachers worked so long and so hard with these kids," said Fairfield principal Christine Blanch. "We have a very strong science program - teachers who are very interested and spend a lot of time."

The first-place teams are now preparing for the national competition in May at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

More than 12,000 students from the 13 junior high schools in Davis County pledged to be tobacco-free during February.

Central Davis Junior High led the pack with 86 percent of its students pledging. Participating students drew for prizes and dis-counts from 28 Davis businesses.

The drive was part of the American Heart Association's Save a Sweet Heart program, whose purpose is to educate youths about the dangers of tobacco. The Davis County Health Department has helped junior highs implement the program the past eight years.

Syracuse Elementary

SYRACUSE - Elementary students here were featured in a USA TODAY advertisement Feb. 26 for their sponsorship of the Utah Rescue Dogs.

The ad was part of Hardee's Rise and Shine for Community Service program.

The students have sold lollipops to raise money for equipment needed by the dogs and their handlers. Most recently, the students helped fund matching harnesses for dogs owned by Dale and Jill Snyder, who have children at Syracuse Elementary.

The ad was part of an advertisement on page 4D of the newspaper featuring four different schools.

"It wasn't huge, but it was something," principal Lindsay Dickinson said. She added that doing things for others helps the students feel good about themselves.
